yancybecket asked: I'm curious about your post on people treating the publishing companies like sports teams. How would you describe the relationship between fellow publishing companies?
Eh, I think of them more as just different entities doing different things within one broad area. While yes, obviously, there is some competition, generally speaking we’re all more worried about doing our own thing well, than “beating” anyone else. Kind of like restaurants: yes, they are all competing in the general sense for where the customer will eat, but is Pizza Hut really competing against Taco Bell? No, because they do different things. What I meant by that post was that I hate when people compare publishing companies one-to-one when they are not. For instance, one time I mentioned to an acquaintance that I work at company X. They immediately said that company Y was better. To me, that was like saying the Rangers are better than the Cowboys. Different sports, different leagues, the comment makes no sense.
I couldn’t find a gif saying “get it?” that didn’t seem condescending and rude so have this cute gif of a giraffe instead. Thanks for the question!
